Recent data released from The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) demonstrates an average 16% decrease in the use of antipsychotics in nursing homes across the nation, with some states seeing a reduction of greater than 30%. The National Partnership to Improve Dementia Care In Nursing Homes started in 2012 with a mission to deliver health care that is person-centered, comprehensive and interdisciplinary.From my professional experience, we have a long way to go for nursing facilities to be able to move from the budget restrained, custodial approach to higher quality, more person-centered care.
This new report provides encouragement and hope for continued efforts to improve quality of care for individuals with dementia living in nursing homes.
